Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • demonstrate basic knowledge of Chinese phonetics and an ability to pronounce Chinese words
  • explain the basics of Chinese characters, including basic strokes and stroke ordering
  • use around 600 common Chinese characters and 800 common Chinese character combinations
  • read and comprehend, with the aid of dictionaries, simplified textsabout and conversations on everyday subjects and situations
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of modern China and Chinese culture.

Course Content

This course is intended for beginners to study, independently, Chinese phonetics, Chinese characters, everyday conversations in Chinese and Chinese culture. This includes listening, reading, writing and completing assignments that will broaden their vocabulary. Supervision is provided throughout the course, as is the opportunity to ask questions.

Assessment

Continous assessment through active participation in seminars, written assignments and oral examinations and through a final written examination.

Forms of Study

Tuition is through obligatory seminars. Chinese is used as the language of tuition, with English or Swedish as support languages.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To get the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required for at least 4.5 credits, including module 5.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Pronunciation - 1.5 cr
Module 2: Characters - 1.5 cr
Module 3: Vocabulary - 1.5 cr
Module 4: Culture - 1.5 cr
Module 5: Written exam - 1.5 cr

  • General entry requirements and English 6. Exemption from Swedish can be given.
