Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • read and comprehend short literary texts in Chinese
  • use an extended set of vocabulary within relevant subjects
  • understand and explain the opinions expressed in the texts and discuss the themes
  • make short prepared presentation on the texts
  • write a simple analysis of literary texts in Chinese.

Course Content

The course offers a general introduction to Chinese literary works of the 20th century through selected representative, literary works, which are relatively easier to read. The objective of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of Chinese literature and language, as used in literary texts. The selected literary works in modern Chinese are read and presented in writing. The students train their ability to read and increase their Chinese vocabulary by reading them in the context of the texts. Through seminar discussions and writing analysis, the students will deepen their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Chinese literature.

Assessment

The course is assessed continuously, orally and in writing, and with a final written and oral examination.

Forms of Study

Chinese is used as the language of tuition, supported by English. Teaching is done in the form of seminars, group work and different individual assignments.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

Prerequisites

  • A minimum of 90 credits in Chinese at undergraduate level
