Learning Outcomes
The overall aim is to develop the student‘s ability to independently carry out research on an economic problem. After completing the course the student should be able to:
- formulate an economically relevant research question. (1)
- use and assess the relevance of scientific work related to the research question. (2)
- compare relevant theories in depth and justify the chosen theoretical framework for the study. (3)
- compare relevant methods in depth and justify the method chosen for the study. (4)
- based on the selected theoretical framework and methodology collect and describe data relevant for the study. (5)
- in a scientifically correct manner analyze and answer the research question. (6)
- evaluate the scientific and practical relevance of the study results.(7)
- write in a scientifically and linguistically appropriate manner. (8)
- within economics make judgments with respect to relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects. (9)
- demonstrate the ability to participate in research and development or other qualified activities. (10)
- present the results and conclusions verbally and discuss these both with those who have special knowledge of the subject and those who do not. (11)
- defend and discuss the results from different perspectives. (12)
- in a scientifically correct manner, critically and constructively discuss another thesis. (13)
Course Content
Assessment
As a first step, the students submit a thesis proposal where the research question, the selected theoretical framework and methodology are presented. It also contains an account whether there is reason to allow the University Research Ethics Board (FEN) to examine research question and / or the chosen method.
In the written report, the student should demonstrate that learning outcomes 1-10 are achieved. At the final seminar, students demonstrate learning outcomes 11-13 are achieved.
In order to get a passing grade the student must have attended all required meetings and seminars, including a final seminar in which students present and defend their work, and discuss another thesis. The student must also have completed the work within 12 calendar months after the course has been formally closed. However, the student can expect guidance only 6 calendar months after the course has been formally closed.
Forms of Study
Students write a thesis proposal where a relevant economic research question is formulated. This is submitted to the course coordinator responsible for the thesis and if approved the students are assigned an appropriate supervisor. The work is developed through meetings with the supervisor and scheduled seminars where the opposition is also practiced. The course also includes information from the research ethics committee at the University of Dalarna. The students will present and defend their work, and be the opponent for another thesis at a final seminar. Furthermore, the thesis must have been published in Dalarna University‘s electronic archives.
