Summary in English

Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course, the student shall be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of:

  • different traditions and key concepts in sociology
  • the sociological meaning of “the modern society”
  • different power relations within modern society, such as those based on class, gender and ethnicity
  • the dependence of everyday social problematics on social processes and structures.

Competence and skills
After completing the course, the student shall be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • analyse different social phenomena through the use of sociological concepts and theories
  • differentiate between person oriented and sociological models of explanation.

Judgement and approach
After completing the course, the student shall be able to demonstrate the ability to reflect upon:

  • sociology as a specific form of societal self-knowledge
  • the way in which sociological knowledge can contribute to personal development
  • the relevance of sociology within social work.
