Guide: Borrow or Reserve a Book

This guide provides instructions on how to find and borrow a book as well as how to add your name to the waiting list if the book is already out on loan.

Search for the Book in Summon

Use the large search box on the library’s homepage to access all our books and other material. Enter the title of the book you are looking for and conduct a search.

You will see a list of results. If you have entered a specific book title, the correct book usually appears at the top of the list. Check that it is the correct edition of the book.

Check Book Availability

To check if a book is available, click on its title in the results list. This will take you to a page with more details about the book. Here you can see how many copies the library has and if they are available or out on loan. Under Home library, you can see which campus has the book.

In this example, we have three copies of a book. Under Status, you can see that one is out on loan (checked out), one is on hold and one is a reference book that must remain in the library (i.e., it cannot be borrowed).

Borrow or Reserve a Book

Borrow an Available Book

The easiest way to borrow an available book is to come to the library, locate it on the shelf and borrow it. You can see the location of the book in the library under Call number.

You can reserve the book and pick it up at the library in either Falun or Borlänge. This can be useful if, for example, the book is in Falun and you study from Campus Borlänge. When the book arrives, you will be notified by a message to you student email. You then have three working days to borrow it from the reservation shelf.

To reserve a book, log in using the large blue button "Place hold" at the top right of the book’s detail page.

Waiting List for Book

If all copies of a book are out on loan (checked out), you can put your  name on the waiting list. Use the "Place hold" button on the book's detail page. When you are logged in, you can see if there are others in line for the book, indicated by the number after “Number of holds".

You will receive notification to your student email when the book becomes available. You then have three working days to borrow it from the library.

Can the book be sent to my home address?

If you are a Dalarna University student who does not live in Sweden or the municipality of either Falun or Borlänge, you can still request that a book be sent to your home address. You will need to pay for the return postage. If you live in Dalarna, you can return the book free of charge via your municipal library.

To request that a book be sent to your home address, log in via the blue “Place hold” button on the book's detail page and select “Home delivery” from the dropdown menu.
