Welcome to Campus Borlänge!

In autumn 2024, Dalarna University moved into the new Campus Borlänge – currently the most modern campus in Sweden - where students, staff, local residents, and visitors are all welcome to meet and interact.

With its modern, flexible, and creative environment, the campus opens up to the city with its many windows that invite passers-by to see what is happening on campus.

The four-floor building houses classrooms and group rooms that have been designed and are equipped for active learning for both campus-based and online students. Its design encourages new educational methods that make use of in-built technology to enable creativity, interaction, and learning on equal terms.

Central Location – a Place for Everyone

Located in the centre of the town of Borlänge, the new campus has two main entrances, one on each side of the building. From the rooftop, you can look out towards the surrounding hills and even catch a glimpse of the downhill ski runs a few miles away at Romme Alpin.

With its two main entrances, one from Liljeqvistska Parken and one from the main street Stationsgatan, the campus is readily accessible. Here, students and residents can meet in a vibrant place of education and research. Close by is the Borlänge train station with frequent trains running to and from central Stockholm, a journey of about 2.5 hours.

Located on the ground floor is the library, which is also open to the general public, as well as a café, both of which offer a place to socialise and study. Open areas and rooms invite everyone to take part in events, be they about education or research.

The central location in Borlänge facilitates important collaboration with companies and organisations for students and researchers. The campus is a natural meeting place and a new landmark for Borlänge.

The new Campus Borlänge is a hub of activity, where everything that happens at the University invites curiosity.

Innovative and Inclusive

Campus Borlänge is unique in what it has to offer. With the involvement of programme staff in its design, it is a place for lectures and group and individual study, and aims to be inviting, inclusive, and innovative.

What happens inside the building is supposed to be visible to the outside world, which explains the great many windows that can even be found in the labs. Examples of purpose-built study areas are the technology lab, the network lab, and Makers Space.

The entire campus can accommodate hybrid teaching, and there are a great many smart solutions that ensure there is a seamless transition between campus-based students and those who study online so that everyone can be an active learner on equal terms.

Sustainability and Nature

Sustainability has been the catchword both during the construction process and with the design of the interior. The building itself is an example of renovation rather than a complete rebuild since it is built on the concrete frame of the original building. The building now has a wooden-panelled facade, and there are solar panels that supply the building with electricity.

The reuse of material has been central to construction: old furniture has been given a new lease of life. Furniture has been refurbished so that not only is the interior modern, but it also demonstrates sustainable responsibility.

The surrounding Dalarna landscape is the inspiration behind the interior and design, including its colour scheme. Green walls and blue floors reflect the colours of the forest, lakes and mountains, while the golden ceiling is symbolic of the historical industrial development of the province of Dalarna. It is this interaction with nature that has created a sense of calm that aims to promote creativity in the quest for knowledge and learning.
