Social Sustainability Survey

One of our doctoral researchers, Marieke Rynoson, is conducting a study to understand how building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are perceived in the urban environment and would like your participation.

Background

Research on sustainability and energy technology is often focused on ways to improve efficiency of the technology, feasibility, or carbon footprint. But what about social sustainability?

In the realm of renewable energy, the concept of “Not In My BackYard” (NIMBY) often surfaces as communities grapple with the local implementation of technologies they support in principle. This paradox is particularly evident in the adoption of PV systems, where despite the general appreciation for clean energy, local opposition can arise due to aesthetic concerns or perceived disruptions; this is also the case with wind turbines.

To mitigate such resistance, it is important to involve potential users in dialogue and design, to find innovative solutions which align with community values. Therefore, as we move towards a more sustainable future in building design, BIPV are not just about energy efficiency, but also about aesthetic harmony.
