Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- describe and compare different critical and theoretical problematizations regarding human rights
- apply critical and theoretical approaches concerning human rights in a selection of historical and contemporary contexts
- problematize how structural power works in relations between various groups in society
- identify and critically analyze possible conflicts between different rights claims as well as between various discursive usages of human rights
- contribute to a dialogue on human rights in a perceptive, nuanced and well-founded way.
Course Content
The course examines various critical stances to human rights and the way in which they have been used historically and in various contexts. The course nuances the outlook on human rights by problematizing tensions that arise when ideals expressed in the form of human rights meet political and social contexts.
Assessment
Well-prepared and active participation in seminars, oral presentations and written assignments.
Forms of Study
The forms of study are lectures and obligatory seminars. All teaching is in English.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
Prerequisites
- 60 credits within history, religious studies, sociology, political science or international relations, and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
Other Information
All teaching is web-based. Seminars and lectures are scheduled at specific times, and active participation is required at the seminars. The student requires a computer, headset, webcam, and internet connection or equivalent technical equipment to take the course.
