Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- understand the importance and necessity of sustainable manufacturing,
- explore strategies for reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing including resource efficiency and waste reduction,
- identify and discuss sustainable manufacturing practices and technologies,
- understand the role of sustainable materials and renewable energy in sustainable manufacturing,
- discuss the importance of the circular economy (remanufacturing, and recycling) for sustainable manufacturing,
- analyse case studies of successful sustainable manufacturing initiatives.
Course Content
The course aims to familiarise students with the fundamental principles and practices of sustainable manufacturing. It covers the impact of manufacturing on the environment, society, and the economy, and introduces strategies to minimise this impact. Key topics include resource efficiency, waste reduction, renewable energy, sustainable materials, circular economy, and emerging technologies and tools that promote sustainability in manufacturing. The following are discussed from Agenda 2030: Goal 8.4 “Use methods that increase resource efficiency in production”; Goal 9.4 “Apply techniques for more efficient use of resources”, “Apply clean and environmentally friendly techniques and industrial processes”; and Goal 12.4 “Promote technical solutions that reduce the amount of waste”.

Grades
The grading scale used for the final course grade is U, 3, 4, 5.
Grades are reported as follows:
- Written examination - 4 Credits | U, 3, 4, 5
- Assignment - 2 Credits | U–G
- seminar - 1.5 Credits | U–G
Prerequisites
- Manufacturing Methods 7,5 credits
Other Information
This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement.
