Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify and discuss different types of writing in the field of literary studies, such as academic papers, scholarly articles and dissertations
  • discuss components of the research process in literary studies, from basic research questions, critical review of previous research, and the choice of method and theory, to text and discourse analysis, and the structure of their own arguments
  • apply common rules and conventions for documentation, paraphrase, citation and bibliography, relevant for the field of intercultural literature studies
  • carry out an independent short literary research assignment on an intercultural literary theme, which is presented in an argumentative essay
  • analyse and discuss the academic writing of others by pointing out strengths as well as weaknesses in the form of a constructive response.

Course Content

The course incorporates advanced studies in the research process of literary studies, which includes critical readings of academic papers, scholarly articles and doctoral dissertations. Common rules and conventions for referencing to primary and secondary sources in the form of quotes and paraphrases, as well as the usage of notes and bibliographies are also studied. During the course, students complete a number of analytical and writing assignments as well as a limited literary research project, which is presented in the form of an argumentative essay.

Assessment

The course is examined through written assignments, continuous assessment of active participation in seminar discussions and a limited research assignment that is presented in the form of an essay. The essay is defended at a seminar, where it is examined by a fellow student.

Forms of Study

The course consists of lectures and obligatory seminars. The language of instruction is English.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

The final grade of the course is based on an overall assessment by the examiner.

Module 1: Essay - 4 cr
Module 2: Seminars and Written Assignments - 3.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor Degree of 180 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required.
