Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • interact in formalised Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) in everyday situations
  • read and answer questions in MSA about short and easy literary texts
  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of the structure of the Arabic language and use this knowledge in both oral and written communication
  • demonstrate some insight into the difference between standard Arabic and the different Arabic dialects
  • demonstrate some insight into the development of the Arabic language.

Course Content

The course consists of three modules. The module Language proficiency 2 builds on the knowledge acquired in module Language proficiency1. During the course the students read texts with an increasing degree of difficulty and at the seminars the grammar content and choice of words in the texts are discussed. The students will then use the vocabulary in the texts orally in role plays and discussions. The students will also do written assignments and listening comprehension related to each text. The third module is independent and consists of lectures on the development of the Arabic language and the differences and similarities between MSA and the dialects.

Assessment

Grades are based on continual assessment of both oral and written performance. Language proficiency 1 ends with a written home exam and Language Proficiency 2 ends with both an oral and a written exam. Great weight is placed on deadlines, and assignments handed in late are only awarded G at most. The third module is examined through answers to written questions and a final written PM.

Forms of Study

Arabic is used as the language of tuition, and English and/or Swedish are used as support languages. Seminars are the main activity for the course and students are expected to participate actively. A number of tasks require the ability to cooperate with other participants. The module Introduction to the Arabic language consists of pre-recorded lectures and articles with connected written exercises for the student to complete individually during the term.
