Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should be able to:
- use the Arabic grammar rules on a basic level correctly in speech and writing
- converse in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) on well-known or prepared topics
- discuss shorter literary texts, poems and news articles in MSA
- make simple but correct translations to and from Arabic
- make simple grammatical analyses in Arabic
- compose short texts in correct MSA
- distinguish certain differences and similarities between the Syrian and Egyptian dialect in comparison with MSA
- use Arabic dictionaries and encyclopedias and briefly describe how they have developed.
Course Content
The course consists of three modules. The module Language proficiency 2 is based on skills acquired in Language proficiency 1. In both modules the students read varied literary texts, news and articles. The texts are prepared by the students and their content, grammar and word choice are discussed during the seminars. The students also watch a short film and listen to songs. For the discussion of the literary texts the students use simple analytical terms. The students learn the foundation of Arabic grammar analysis and apply this to easy texts. A comparison between the Egyptian/Syrian dialects and MSA is carried out. During the course the students compose shorter written texts in connection to each lesson, and they also complete a reading project finishing with a longer written report. The module Arabic dictionaries and encyclopedias is studied separately and individually. The students study how Arabic dictionaries and encyclopedias have developed and how they are used.
Assessment
The module Language proficiency 1 will be assessed continually through assignments and seminar activity during the course and a final written test. The module Language proficiency 2 is assessed continually during the course through assignments and seminar activity and a final oral and written test. The module Arabic dictionaries and encyclopedias is examined through a practical test and a short written report. Great weight is places on deadlines, and assignments handed in late are only awarded G at most.
Forms of Study
The course will be taught in Arabic with either Swedish or English as a support language. The teaching is done in the form of seminars and group exercises for modules 1 and 2, module 3 is studied individually throughout the course.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To get the grade of VG on the whole course VG is required on the modules Language proficiency 1 and Language proficiency 2.
