English Linguistics
Teaching in Linguistics in the English department focuses on how the English language is used in different contexts and for different purposes. Our teaching on the early level undergraduate courses (on the English I and II courses) takes the form of contrastive grammar and pronunciation studies. Students are also introduced to different types of knowledge we have when we know a language plus how the English language is used in different contexts.
On the later undergraduate courses (English III and IV), courses follow teachers' research interests and focus on Social variation in the English language, how larger corpora (databases) of language data can be used and analysed. Students get a thorough grounding in methods of doing linguistic research before they write the BA thesis.
Our one-year MA programme in Applied English Linguistics follows on from this background, and goes deeply into different areas and controversies within applied linguistics, such as the role of English in the world, among others. Again, our research interests shape this programme: we study online language use, attitudes to English around the world, how languages are learned, among other topics. Teacher Education
A number of courses in the English department focus on subject didactics, i.e. the teaching and learning of English for students in the teacher programme. The department offers courses for those studying to become primary school teachers and upper secondary teachers, as well as for those studying to teach years 7-9. In addition to language didactics, courses for pre-service primary school teachers include modules for oral and written proficiency as well as the study and analysis of literary texts and the teaching of literature.
Pre-service upper secondary school teachers take courses together with general students of English in undergraduate and later undergraduate courses (English l, ll, III and IV), be it with some minor differences. Rather than writing a BA thesis, they write two degree theses as part of their teacher programme on topics dealing with English didactics. Teacher students with English as a second or third language take courses at the undergraduate and later undergraduate level, and write a paper on either linguistics or literature.
Thesis courses for pre-service primary teachers are organized under the umbrella of Educational Work (Pedagogiskt arbete) but are taught by members of the English department, who act as supervisors and examiners. Students conduct their own empirical study on some aspect of the teaching of English.
The English department has also been involved in teaching courses within Lärarlyftet, the Swedish National Agency for Education's in-service initiative for active, certified teachers. These courses focus on subjects such as language didactics, children's literature, grammar, oral proficiency and film studies, and are offered to teachers at all levels of schooling.
Literature in English
Studying English literature at Dalarna University involves the acquisition of skills that are useful in various professional and social contexts, as it develops reasoning, critical, and evaluative abilities necessary for our complex globalised information society. Our literature courses place special emphasis on developing awareness and knowledge of the diversity of literatures in English, as well as of the various literary genres, literary periods and theoretical and disciplinary questions that inform literary studies in English.
Our courses on the English I and II levels address the study of literary forms, literature in a social context, and historical readings of literature. We also offer a number of elective courses that focus on specific themes, such as popular literature and children’s literature. Our courses at English III level build on the concepts and reading practices studied at English I and II levels and are characterised by a greater emphasis on developing theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills. All these courses provide the necessary basis for the writing of the Bachelor Degree Thesis in Literature in English.
At the Master’s level, we offer a one-year Master’s Programme in English with Specialisation in Literature in English. The programme is course and research based and builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in our undergraduate level courses. The courses are informed by the research expertise and interests of our teaching staff, which are closely related to disciplinary, socio-cultural and historical issues that have a particular contemporary relevance, including global migration, diasporas, environmental concerns and transcultural interconnections.
